ip.access, a UK developer of picocell and femtocell solutions for improved mobile phone coverage indoors, has appointed Philip Rimell as its new chief operating officer (COO). Outgoing COO Alan Hewitt is retiring after having established ip.access’ femtocell delivery program.

Philip Rimell joins ip.access from telecoms solutions provider JacobsRimell, which he co-founded in 1997 to provide automated provisioning and activation for a range of IP-based services to cable, wireline and wireless operators. Rimell was responsible for the architecture that underpinned JacobsRimell’s products. This year, the company was acquired by Amdocs.

ip.access is a manufacturer of cost-effective picocell and femtocell infrastructure solutions for GSM, GPRS, EDGE and 3G. These solutions bring IP and cellular technologies together and solve in-building access problems for mobile operators. The company’s Oyster 3G femtocell solution increases 3G cell capacity and coverage, improves quality of experience for the end-user; and drives down costs for the operator. It is currently in trials with operators and the first commercial launches are expected in the first half of 2009.

Meanwhile the ip.access nanoGSM is the company’s picocell solution for cellular networks. It provides GSM, GPRS and EDGE coverage and capacity for offices, shops and using satellite backhaul passenger aircraft, ships and in remote rural areas.

The company boasts 35 live networks around the world and is heavily funded by the likes of Scottish Equity Partners, Rothschild Gestion, Intel Capital, Amadeus Capital Partners, ADC, Cisco, Qualcomm and Motorola Ventures.
