Virtensys, a UK provider of next-generation I/O solutions for data centers, has appointed John Nicholson as chairman of the board of directors. He has been member of the board since 2006.

Nicholson has advised emerging technology companies as a non-executive director and chairman over the last 10 years. He also has international experience at a senior level in the IT industry. Previous positions include vice president of Compaq Computer Corporation and vice president of Digital Equipment Corporation.

“We are very pleased to have a high-caliber individual such as John take on a bigger role with the company,” said Virtensys CEO Ahmet Houssein in a company statement. “His expertise in helping companies accelerate their development and growth is extremely important to us, and he will play a pivotal role in bringing our I/O virtualization products to worldwide enterprise customers.”

Virtensys develops PCI Express-based I/O virtualization technologies for servers and storage platforms. The company aims to change the way I/O infrastructures are deployed and used in data centers, and claims its products deliver improvements in I/O utilization, cost, performance, power consumption and management. The company was founded in December 2005 and is backed by Scottish Equity Partners (SEP), Celtic House and GIMV. Its last round was reported last year in August and totaled €11.3 million. It previously raised €8.1 million in January 2008 and €9.5 million in October 2006.
