UK-based WiFi social login and location analytics platform Purple WiFi has secured €4.3 million in fresh funds. The round was led by Terry Leahy, Bill Currie, Iain MacDonald and Bob Willett from the William Currie Group with participation from Jonathan Hammond and Steve Ashton and angel syndicate Juno Capital (including investors such as Nigel Rudd and three senior Ernst and Young partners who facilitated the round). The investment funds will be used for continued product development and for staff recruitment to support its international expansion, targeting EMEA, APAC and the Americas.

Purple WiFi provides a social WiFi solution to businesses that want to offer free WiFi to visitors. Users gain free access to a public WiFi network through their existing social media accounts or a short form. The benefit to the business hosting the service is that they are provided with analytic insights into the profiles and movements of their customers and a built-in marketing platform. The service is cloud-based and integrates with most wireless hardware manufacturers, notably Cisco and Cisco Meraki.

Purple WiFi boasts a reseller base of over 300 in 60 countries. It sees most growth in the sectors hospitality (where people have time to spend online), retail (where footfall tracking is essential), healthcare (offering transparency around service and communication) and cities moving towards the Internet of Things.

Purple WiFi appointed former Tesco CEO Terry Leahy and Ian Kelly as board members.
