Belgium-based venture capitalist Gimv has committed a total sum of €4.5 million in Made In Design’s first institutional funding round. The online store for design furniture is based in France, but in addition to the site in its native French also operates a UK shop. The proceeds of the round will be used to strengthen its presence in the B2B market as a strategic partner for design brands, as well as expand the online service in other European countries. First up are Italy and Germany in 2010. Gimv’s Anne Caron and Geoffroy Dubus will join Made In Design’s board of directors.

Made In Design was founded in 1999 and is France’s main online destination for the purchase of design furniture and objects. The company boasts partnerships with design brands such as Alessi, Kartell and Foscarini. The site offers more than 10,000 products, from over 800 designers. The offering spans a set of Starck-knifes of just over €2 to a lounge tent by Extremis worth €16,000. Last year, Made In Design realized a turnover of more than €7 million.
