wooga wins another €5 million in VC backing
German social games developer wooga has received €5 million in a round of funding led by Balderton Capital. Holtzbrinck Ventures, which invested in the company in August this year, has also participated in this round. The proceeds from the round will be used to hire new personnel, continue its game development and further grow the company. Balderton partner Roberto Bonanzinga will join Wooga’s board.
wooga - short for ‘world of gaming’ - was founded in January 2009 and develops games for social networks. Its first game, called Brain Buddies, was released on Facebook in July this year and attracts a whopping 6 million users per month. The brain training game was simultaneously launched in 8 languages and offers its users a playful way to determine their brain weight. Friends can challenge one another to find the one with the ‘heaviest brain’. The company plans to release two new games in the coming weeks.
Roberto Bonanzinga said in a statement: “wooga has a dynamic and experienced management team, led by founder Jens Begemann.... Social gaming on sites such as Facebook is a key growth sector right now. We have full confidence in Jens’ ability to build a world-class team and look forward to working with wooga to expand its market further and build a global business.”
