Arma Partners hires Tom Wells to spearhead push into Telecoms banking

We are pleased to announce that Tom Wells has joined Arma Partners as a Partner, based in our London office. Tom’s mandate will be to lead our recently initiated expansion from the Technology sector into the broader “TMT” (Technology, Media & Telecoms) advisory business, leveraging his world-class track record as a Telecoms banker.

Tom joins us from Merrill Lynch, where he was a Managing Director and Head of Telecom Investment Banking for Europe, the Middle East & Africa, based in London. Previously Tom was a Managing Director in the European Telecom Investment Banking team at Citigroup. Before Merrill Lynch and Citigroup, Tom was Head of Corporate Finance for British Telecom. During his 15 years working within the telecom sector Tom has advised many of the leading operators on over $150 billion worth of transactions, including BT, O2, Cable & Wireless, BSkyB, Deutsche Telekom, TDC, TeliaSonera, Belgacom, KPN, Telekom Austria, Portugal Telecom, MTN, Bharti Airtel, China Mobile and MegaFon. Tom began his career with Coopers & Lybrand, in Toronto and in London, where he qualified as a Chartered Accountant and a Chartered Financial Analyst after graduating with a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) from Queens University in Kingston, Canada.

Having established itself as Europe’s largest and most active financial advisor to Technology companies, Arma Partners has recently completed a number of transactions illustrating the growing convergence between Technology and Telecoms. These include in 2008 advising alternative telecoms company freenet on its $2.5 billion acquisition of debitel Group, the largest Managed Service Provider in Germany; and Swedish mobile location-based services provider Wayfinder on its sale to Vodafone Group; and, in May this year, advising freenet on the $172 million sale of its DSL division to United Internet, a major German Internet Service Provider.

New technologies made available to consumers through the provision of broadband services and the increased functionality of mobile devices are creating new revenue streams for the Telecoms industry, and it is impossible to effectively advise the growing number of companies affected by these trends without a deep understanding of the dynamics within, and between, the three segments that make up the TMT sector. Arma Partners expects the blurring of boundaries between Technology, Media & Telecoms to be a key driver of M&A activity in 2009 and beyond, and accordingly intends to reinforce its activity in the broader TMT area, building on its recognised expertise and track record of successful deal execution in the Technology sector.

Founded in 2003, Arma Partners is a leading independent financial advisor focused solely on the Technology, Media & Telecoms sector.
