LibraGen announces a sustainable process intensification in the manufacturing of cosmetic actives

Toulouse, 2010, January 13th

LibraGen, a green chemistry process and production specialist, announced today that the company has performed a key milestone by intensifying the manufacturing process of two of its Inoveol® cosmetics actives:

- Inoveol® CAFA, the cutting edge version of caffeic acid from green coffee, with five synergistic actions to fight premature photo-aging of skin; and

- Inoveol® GALA, a pioneering long lasting form of gallic acid from oaks, with high astringency capabilities and skin soothing efficiency.

Initiated in early 2009, this achievement is the result of several months of experimental design to further optimize the productivity of LibraGen's green manufacturing process of these innovative skin care actives.

'Inoveol® actives have been designed from the beginning to meet the 'green attitude'. They are natural plant polyphenols which are grafted with a sugar by means of an enzymatic reaction to make them stable, bioavailable and highly water soluble' says Renaud Nalin, CEO of LibraGen. ' These pure molecules are inspired from a chemical secret we discovered from plants : they not only provide the market with a new generation of actives, they also anticipate the green attitude expectations, and the market innovation requests'.

To reach this new level of performance, LibraGen's engineers have been tightly modifying the water based reaction conditions, optimizing an enzyme immobilization method that permits its use over several rounds of manufacturing. In addition they also rationalized the recycling of the plant raw material extracts to reduce the overall carbon footprint.

'Process intensification leads to a substantially more energy and raw materials efficient process technology', says Daniel Auriol, Chief Technology Development Manager at LibraGen. 'This process improvement is in frame with the usual industrial development we perform for our customers from fine chemistry and pharmaceutical industries. We expect to apply soon these results to the other actives from our portfolio'.

Since 2007, LibraGen as created and patented more than 50 active compounds, seven of them being now commercialized and distributed worldwide.

About Inoveol® actives

Inoveol® actives are the outcome of several years of LibraGen's biotechnology research during which plants greatest active ingredients, polyphenols, have been converted into the utmost advanced natural actives meeting the technical and market requirements of the cosmetic industry.

Inoveol® have been inspired from a private secret of plants which attach a sugar on polyphenols to have them bioavailable and soluble in their cells. LibraGen's research discovered a process to graft this sugar at the most autooxidative part of polyphenols, which renders them both perfectly stable (high resistance to spontaneous oxidation) and water soluble (direct incorporation into any formula). All the more, Inoveol® actives exhibit an 'in situ' release capability as skin micro-flora can cleave their sugar and liberate their polyphenolic part on skin for a long term efficiency.

A complete collection of Inoveol® actives was created from different renown healthcare plants (green tea, green coffee, apple tree, larch, lemon balm, oak, olive tree); and show a unique range of biological activities in the area of age fighting, mature skin protection, skin depollution, photo-aging prevention, sensitize skin care and skin complexion enhancement.
