Enterprise-Ireland appoints Life Sciences Start-up Ambassador for the US

Enterprise-Ireland has today (Thursday 5 July 2012) announced the appointment of Dr Arthur Rosenthal as its Life Sciences Start-up Ambassador for the US, as part of its strategy to promote Ireland’s offering and encourage overseas entrepreneurs to locate start-up businesses in Ireland. This follows on from earlier appointments of Start-Up Ambassadors for key markets in the UK, China and Middle East.

Dr Rosenthal has spent more than 38 years developing medial device technologies as individual contributor, technology executive and serial entrepreneur. He is recognized internationally as a leading expert in the field of medical technology and will now bring this vast experience to working closely with Enterprise Ireland to highlight Ireland and what it has to offer for medical and related technology start-ups.

The announcement follows on the launch late last year of a dedicated €10 million International Start-Up Fund to target investor ready overseas entrepreneurs to start their business in Ireland. Administered by Enterprise Ireland, the fund is open to company promoters anywhere in the world, but is targeted particularly at the Irish Diaspora, international expatriates, the ‘New Diaspora’ (people from overseas who have previously worked or studied in Ireland), as well as serial and mobile entrepreneurs. In addition to the new Start-up Entrepreneur Programme visa initiative announced recently by the Minister for Justice and Equality, Alan Shatter TD, this makes Ireland a highly attractive location to start and grow an international business.

Stimulating the flow of new start-ups and supporting their growth are fundamental building blocks in Enterprise Ireland’s strategy for economic growth and job creation. Availability of VC and seed funding as well as an excellent ecosystem for start-ups which includes mentoring, start-up incubators, export support, training and networking are some of the key benefits that will be highlighted to potential entrepreneurs in the US.

An increasing number of mobile international entrepreneurs are coming to Ireland as their location of choice to start a new business and from the volume of enquiries that Enterprise-Ireland has received this trend is continuing in 2012.

Eddie Goodwin, VP for Life Science in the US market for Enterprise Ireland commented: ‘We are delighted to have the esteemed medical device expert Art Rosenthal as an Ambassador for this programme. Art has direct experience of successfully starting up in Ireland having recently established his third Enterprise Ireland-supported high potential start-up (HPSU) Med Devices company in Galway. It is a big plus for us to have someone with this track record, based locally in the US who is able to share their experience with other US entrepreneurs’.

Art Rosenthal added:
‘I am honored by my appointment and embrace the opportunity to support the ongoing efforts in building a second to none environment for medical technology start ups. With its easy access to critical infrastructure, well trained engineers, scientists, universities, and productive labor market, Ireland represents an ideal location for establishing and nurturing medical technology commercialization. Personally, I am delighted to share my personal experiences with budding entrepreneurs and help facilitate their consideration of an Ireland home base’.
