DSM Venturing invests in funds targeting life sciences and performance materials

Heerlen (NL), July 18, 2005 – DSM Venturing, the corporate venturing unit of Dutch specialty maker DSM, today announced its participation in two venture capital funds. Investments in NGEN II and Life Sciences Partners III will extend the company’s window on innovation in industries of strategic importance to DSM, namely life science products and performance materials.

The NGEN II fund focuses on mid to later-stage venture investments in mainly US companies strong in materials science and active in the areas of clean and sustainable technology, advanced materials and coatings, biomaterials and electronic materials, which are all areas of interest to DSM’s activities in Performance Materials. DSM Venturing decided to participate in NGEN’s second fund to maintain the window on materials science related innovations as created by its earlier investment in NGEN’s first fund. Moreover, DSM expects to accelerate its own innovations in the performance materials area, by co-operating with small innovative companies, both directly and indirectly, via NGEN.

To specifically strengthen its innovation in the life sciences field, DSM Venturing has also invested in Life Sciences Partners III, a venture capital fund dedicated to life science investments in Europe with a Benelux and German focus. This fund was set up by LSP, a leading European venture capital firm with which DSM Venturing has previously co-operated. LSP will use the new fund to invest in 15 to 20 startup companies.

Marc Schueler, general manager DSM Venturing, comments: “Fund investments are an effective way to create dealflow in aid of our investment process in promising startup companies. With our investments in NGEN and LSP, we are reconfirming our partnership with two of the world’s leading VC companies in our key investment areas.”
