Oregan Networks announces convergent digital home platform based on Toshiba AVM49R reference design,
Oregan™ Media Browser is now integrated with Toshiba TX4938 RISC-based Microprocessor

London, United Kingdom, 29th July 2005 – Oregan Networks, a leading provider of embedded software, have developed a complete IP media delivery client platform, enabling digital home standards and IPTV features on the recently released AVM49R reference design, running on the MontaVista Linux operating system. The solution caters for convergent vertical market media devices, such as hybrid IP STBs and PVRs, enabling high-definition media streaming from broadband Internet, as well as between interoperable home network devices.

Toshiba’s AVM49R reference design is ready for integration with content services, Conditional Access and DRM technologies via an extensive set of embedded software APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) provided by Oregan Media Browser. User interface graphics and navigation customisation is available through Oregan Networks’ UI design SDK, utilising HTML 4.01, Dynamic HTML and Macromedia® Flash® content rendering technologies for advanced visual effects and interactivity.

Tetsuro Wada, Director of Business Development and Technical Marketing, RISC Microprocessor and Multimedia Business Unit, Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc., said, “Convergence of broadcast, broadband and home media is gaining significant traction as telecoms and cable service providers are striving to capture the market with enhanced entertainment offerings over FTTH and VDSL. Oregan Media Browser enhances the AVM49R reference design, enabling delivery of source-independent video, audio and gaming functions. The platform is optimal for enabling fast and cost-effective deployment of highly reliable unicast and multicast-based services.”

Reed Hinkel, Oregan Networks Vice President of Business Development in the U.S. said, “Hardware and software performance is a crucial success factor in the deployment of IP-based network entertainment services driven by highly compressed media and interactive applications. AVM49R is a powerful, yet cost-effective reference design, supporting a complete set of vital hardware, middleware and application components benefiting from a powerful 333 MHz CPU for system-related tasks, with advanced video decode functionality and HD video up-scaling provided by the Sigma Designs 8620 media processor, coupled with a VWEB media encoder for PVR applications.”

'He added, “Oregan’s ANSI C-based suite of UI rendering and IP media delivery building blocks vastly outperforms Java solutions in terms of speed and footprint, providing a highly responsive user experience.”
