Sumners and GMTV to trial Ricall music management system

July 17 2006, Sumners, the regional production facility, and GMTV, the ITV breakfast show widely regarded as Europe’s biggest, are to trial the music management system operated by Ricall, the world’s leading music search and licensing marketplace.

Under the terms of the deal all commercial music for Sumners and GMTV, including content, branding and promotional spots, will now be sourced and downloaded using Ricall and its catalogue of over 2.5 million music tracks.

In spite of the breadth of its catalogue, Ricall’s system requires minimal bandwidth and memory capacity, making it attractive to the IT departments of both companies. In addition, downloading via Ricall does not require the lowering of security standards on company firewalls, which can be a prohibitive issue with some consumer music sites.

Brian Hardman, general manager and chief engineer at Sumners, which regularly produces content for BBC television, said: “The fact that Ricall offers such a broad choice of tracks is obviously a key factor in trialling the service, but the fact that it slots easily into our existing IT systems without compromising our online security is also very appealing. We’re looking forward to trialling the system properly.”

Cathy Cooper, manager of music at GMTV added: “We are trialling the Ricall system with the hope that it will give us the opportunity to search and download tracks with the minimum of effort and to eventually eliminate the need for a physical library. The downloads are of broadcast quality and the music itself is easy to manage on the system. This will add to our creative process and enhance our programme output. It’s an impressive package.”

Ricall’s state-of-the-art music search engine accesses a growing commercial music catalogue, including every UK Top 40 hit since charts began in 1952, alongside a vast collection of jazz, classical, blues, soundtrack and other non chart tracks.

Both Sumners and GMTV are set to trial the system for two months.

About Ricall
UK based Ricall operates in the commercial music market, currently worth £1 billion and growing at 20 per cent a year, with companies from the advertising, film, television, computer games and corporate sectors increasingly using music as a key part of their activities. The company simplifies the process for all parties through its web-based research and licensing network which brings together professional buyers and sellers of music to facilitate the straightforward licensing of music for any business use. Once users have found the track they want, they submit details of how they want to use it and Ricall manage all the rights holders – turn around in permission now takes days rather than the previous average of well over 3 months.

With licences from all the industry bodies, Ricall offers users the world’s most comprehensive music archive, with every hit to have charted in the UK since 1952, and the US Hot 100 since 1954. The archive also includes a substantial amount of non chart pop, jazz, classical, comedy and film soundtracks. This means users have access to music from more than 3,500 record companies and 22,000 music publishers, including all the major labels. For more information visit
