MobileAware Continues to Drive Standards of the Mobile Web
MobileAware Hosts International W3C Workshop on Declarative Models of Distributed Web Applications

Dublin, Ireland – April 17, 2007 – MobileAware, the world’s leading provider of Mobile Service Infrastructure, today announced that it will host an international World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) workshop in Dublin, Ireland from 5 – 6 June.
The event, which is co-sponsored by the Irish State Development Agency, Enterprise Ireland, will guide future W3C work on the standards and best practices for extending the Web from the desktop to a multitude of fixed and mobile devices in the home, office and mobile environments. Participants in the workshop will include industry experts from areas such as user interface and application modeling, security and usability, content adaptation and mobile device capabilities. The workshop is the second international W3C workshop to take place in Ireland – MobileAware previously hosted Ireland’s first W3C workshop in October 2004, which made significant contributions to the creation of an accessible device independent Web.

Themed ‘Declarative Models of Distributed Web Applications,’ the workshop will discuss the potential role of declarative techniques in reducing the costs of building Web applications accessible by an increasing variety of devices. Web applications currently involve a considerable amount of complex programming, both in the Web page and Web server, which creates high development and maintenance costs when Web applications are adapted for multiple device types. Declarative (non-programming) approaches to Web application development promote the of use common declarative languages to describe how Web components should behave. This reduces the over-reliance on programming skills currently required to extend Web applications beyond the desktop.

'We are delighted to welcome back some of the world’s top researchers and thought leaders to Dublin to further the W3C’s goal of leading the Web to its full potential,” commented Kevin McCloskey, MobileAware’s chief executive officer. “Now that the Web has moved from the confines of the desktop to other emerging environments such as consumer electronics, interactive television, and even automobiles, the needs for effective standards to reduce the complexity of deploying applications to these devices has never been greater. Hosting this workshop reaffirms our long-standing commitment to W3C and to the valuable contribution the Consortium makes to the mobile software industry.”

MobileAware has played a leadership role in the W3C since 2000 and is a founding sponsor of the W3C Mobile Web Initiative (MWI), which aims to make Web access from a mobile device as simple and convenient as Web access from a desktop device. MobileAware is represented within W3C by the company’s Chief Innovations Architect, Dr Rotan Hanrahan, who is Chair of the Device Description Working Group, is a member of the recently formed Ubiquitous Web Applications Working Group, and is also a member of the MWI Steering Council and W3C Advisory Committee.
