Top Five Security Startups of Europe in 2008 Announced Europe's top five security start-ups compete in Brussels for a spot in final of competition Organizers of the international competition seek to highlight the world’s most promising security technologies. The two winners of the European Semi-Final will compete against winners from the Asian and Americas legs at the final event hosted by London Business School on November 13 for a $500,000 grant. The top five European security start-ups 2008 are: • Arktis Radiation Detectors (Switzerland) – capability to detect and localize fast-neutron radiation for faster and more accurate cargo screening • Beyond Encryption Technologies (Ireland) – remote control of devices to actively protect sensitive data • Intuview (Israel) – “artificial intuition” software for real-time exploitation of Arabic-language documents to determine contents of intelligence value • Metaforic (UK) – prevents hackers from modifying or subverting code even when a system is compromised • QCC Technologies/Blackthorne (UK) – software suite for incident assessment and response management The University of Kent’s Brussels School of International Studies joined the GSC earlier this year to host the European part of this international competition. The European Semi-Final will occur at the Silken Hotel Berlaymont next to the EU Commission on September 24th, where business plans will be presented to a panel of judges, consisting of leaders from TSWG of the US Government, Smiths Detection and PegasusBridge Fund Management. The directors of the GSC, Simon Schneider and Janeen Chupa, commented: “This year, we saw a record number of submissions from innovators in the Europe, originating from universities, research labs, corporate spin-offs and their own garages. The breadth of the innovations from all kinds of disciplines showed us the value of hosting this competition to empower people with ideas.” The Global Security Challenge was founded by MBA students at the London Business School and is the first global competition to feed the growing market for new security technologies. The GSC is sponsored by TSWG of the U.S. Government, Accenture, Smiths Detection, PegasusBridge Fund Management, BAE Systems and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, among others.
